Intro

The University of Miami Institutional Review Boards (IRB's) review all human subject research conducted under the auspices of the University of Miami. The University IRB's also serve as the IRB of record for the Jackson Health System.



Function

Function

The function of the IRBs is to ensure adherence to all federal, state, local, and institutional regulations concerning the protection of human subjects in research. All human subject research conducted by faculty, staff, and students of the University and Jackson Health System must receive IRB review and approval prior to commencement.



Jurisdicion

Jurisdiction

The IRBs have the responsibility of reviewing all human subject research conducted by faculty, staff and students of both the University of Miami and the Jackson Health System (JHS). The IRBs' jurisdiction extends not only to research conducted on University and JHS premises, but also to research conducted elsewhere under the auspices of these institutions.



Structure and Composition

Structure and Composition

There are four IRBs at the University of Miami for the review of research involving human subjects. These IRBs are as follows:

  1. MEDICAL SCIENCES IRB - A
  2. MEDICAL SCIENCES IRB - B 
  3. MEDICAL SCIENCES IRB - C
  4. SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES IRB (SBS-IRB)

In addition, the University has signed and implemented IRB affiliation agreements with the following IRBs:

  1. NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE ADULT CENTRAL IRB (NCI-CIRB)
  2. NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE PEDIATRIC CENTRAL IRB (NCI-CIRB)
  3. FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IRB
  4. WESTERN IRB (WIRB)
  5. FRED HUTCHINSON CANCER RESEARCH CENTER IRB 

The UM IRBs are composed of members from both scientific and non-scientific backgrounds. Membership includes faculty and staff from both the University and Jackson Health System, as well as representatives from the local community. Priority is placed on having diversity of membership in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, and sufficient representation of both scientific and non-scientific expertise.



Administration

Administration

The Human Subjects Research Office (HSRO) serves as the administrative arm of the University IRBs. The Office is headed by the Associate Vice Provost for Human Subjects Research who sets the strategic direction of the HSRO and manages the fiscal, regulatory and protocol review operations of the Office. The Associate Vice Provost for Human Subjects Research reports directly to the Vice Provost for Research, the Signatory Institutional Official for the University's Human Subjects Protections Program.
